Lovecraftian inspirations from real life and beliefs
A free, 49-page brochure of cosmic-horror ideas drawn from real-world beliefs, history and science, written for Game Masters and curious readers.
Free to use, including in games and stories. No attribution or payment required.
About the brochure
This brochure draws inspiration from beliefs held by people who live—or once lived—on Earth, as well as from history and science. Each example suggests how a belief or fact might be viewed through a cosmic-horror lens, by emphasizing its unsettling elements or bending them slightly.
Some entries are deliberately brief: they are starting points for further reading and creative exploration, not exhaustive discussions of every subject.
It was written primarily for Game Masters running Lovecraft-inspired games such as Call of Cthulhu, Trail of Cthulhu and Delta Green. Other fans of cosmic horror—and readers curious about the real-world topics behind it—may find plenty to explore as well.
Use it freely
