William Dyer is the Miskatonic University geologist who narrates At the Mountains of Madness and later participates in the Australian expedition in The Shadow out of Time. His Antarctic account is written to prevent further exploration, after discoveries force him to reinterpret both Earth’s prehuman history and the beings initially treated as fossil specimens. His first name is explicitly supplied in the later story.
