Joe Slater, also recorded as Joe Slaader, is the Catskill hunter and institutionalized patient at the center of Beyond the Wall of Sleep. His extraordinary dream speech attracts a young medical internee, who tries to communicate with him through a speculative telepathic instrument. The resulting account separates Slater’s vulnerable human life from the luminous intelligence the narrator believes has shared it.
