Ibid turns a mistaken reading of a citation abbreviation into the life of an imaginary Roman scholar. After a mock biography crowded with disputed authorities, the story follows his skull through a millennium of conquest, devotion, theft and trade. The relic finally resurfaces in Milwaukee. Its scholarly apparatus is part of the joke, not evidence that its supposed subject existed.
