Robert E. Howard (1906–1936) was a Texas writer whose historical adventure, supernatural horror, boxing stories, westerns and fantastic kingdoms extended well beyond his best-known creation, Conan. His correspondence with Lovecraft and contributions such as the fictional scholar Friedrich von Junzt place him within the original Mythos circle, while the Kull and Conan settings retain their own histories and literary identities.

The Shadow Kingdom

Robert E. Howard’s The Shadow Kingdom is a Kull adventure in which a newly established king discovers that serpent-headed impostors can occupy the faces and offices of his closest associates. First published in Weird Tales in August 1929, it combines palace conspiracy, supernatural deception, violent action and doubts about the stability of personal identity.
