Dr. Elihu Whipple is the elderly Providence physician and antiquarian whose research enables the investigation in The Shunned House. The narrator’s uncle, he preserves evidence that others have dismissed, supplies the means for an attempted scientific confrontation and dies during the cellar vigil. His nephew’s affection makes that loss central to the story’s meaning.
