Dagon connects Lovecraft’s early nightmare of an exposed ocean floor with the later religion of Innsmouth. The name has a real ancient history, but the giant seen in the 1917 story, the figure Father Dagon and later visual interpretations should be distinguished rather than merged without qualification.
