Bibliography and editions

A Lovecraft bibliography must identify more than titles. It must distinguish the scope of a collection, the text it reproduces, the names credited, and the dates of composition, publication and revision. Different editions can serve different purposes without containing the same works or supporting the same kinds of research.

The discarded draft of The Shadow over Innsmouth preserves portions of an abandoned version, not an alternative complete novella. Its opening, jewelry-shop scene and encounter with Zadok show how the familiar town took shape through revision. The narrator’s home, the retrospective destruction of Innsmouth and the presentation of the Marsh business differ from the finished story.

Robert E. Howard

Robert E. Howard (1906–1936) was a Texas writer whose historical adventure, supernatural horror, boxing stories, westerns and fantastic kingdoms extended well beyond his best-known creation, Conan. His correspondence with Lovecraft and contributions such as the fictional scholar Friedrich von Junzt place him within the original Mythos circle, while the Kull and Conan settings retain their own histories and literary identities.
