Francis Wayland Thurston is the Boston narrator who assembles the evidence in The Call of Cthulhu. His investigation begins with the papers of his grand-uncle George Gammell Angell and expands through interviews, travel and Johansen’s maritime manuscript. He does not directly see Cthulhu. His terror comes from recognizing that independent records appear to describe different parts of the same event.

Henry Wentworth Akeley is the Vermont researcher whose letters form much of The Whisperer in Darkness. Living near Townshend, he gathers evidence of nonhuman activity and sends it to Albert Wilmarth. His apparent change from terrified resistance to enthusiastic cooperation initiates the farmhouse visit, but the story’s final objects make the identity of the welcoming speaker profoundly uncertain.
