The Great God Pan is a central predecessor of Lovecraft’s horror, but Machen’s achievement also encompasses mystical fiction, literary criticism, translation, autobiography and journalism. His search for wonder belongs to an independent imaginative and religious tradition, rather than to an early version of a fixed Cthulhu Mythos.
