The Shunned House

The Shunned House follows an unnamed Providence investigator and his uncle, Dr. Elihu Whipple, as they trace generations of illness to a house on Benefit Street. Family records, servants’ recollections, anomalous vegetation and a forgotten burial ground lead to an attempted scientific confrontation with a vampiric presence. The story joins a densely documented local history to an intimate loss, and ends with an unusually effective removal of the immediate threat.
