Early references and a bibliographic correction

Joshi identifies The Render of the Veils as the book's first citation. Its connection with The Inhabitant of the Lake is central, but should not erase the earlier reference. His account also places a sought-after twelfth volume in Cold Print, where the forbidden book becomes part of a disturbing encounter in a shabby urban bookshop.

Campbell on inventing an occult book

Interviewed by Charles Tan in 2014, Campbell recalled inventing the Revelations at sixteen. He was dissatisfied with how little mystery an early quoted passage conveyed. For the later novella, he wanted the imagined work to suggest something larger than the portion a reader could see.

He described an ambition toward the awe and uncertainty he admired in Blackwood's The Willows, Machen's The White People and Lovecraft's The Colour out of Space. These comments concern his literary aims, rather than a claim that those works belong to the fictional book's contents.

The archivist’s acquisition

Stephen Theaker's contemporary review describes Leonard Fairman's attempt to collect the volumes in Gulshaw. Frank Lunt initially appears to offer the desired collection, but possession of one book leads onward to another holder.

The successive volumes concern subjects including human transformation, the world as a dwelling place for something else, night and the uses of the dead. The arrangement turns a bibliographic task into a series of troubling encounters. Reading brings increasingly invasive associations rather than the reassurance of a completed catalogue.

A Victorian rarity within the fiction

The novella's publicity presents the work as an exceptionally rare Victorian survival whose existence has become uncertain. Fairman's public discussion of that rarity prompts the offer that draws him away from the university. The historical-sounding framing belongs to Campbell's fiction: it does not establish an actual Victorian occult publication that readers can locate in a real archive.

Publication and interpretation

The Last Revelation of Gla'aki appeared in 2013 and was a Shirley Jackson Award nominee discussed in Tan's 2014 interview. Campbell's account makes the later treatment a conscious second attempt at an old creation, with mystery itself among the intended effects.

Connections with the wider forbidden library

The title belongs beside the Necronomicon and Book of Eibon as a fictional textual authority, while retaining Campbell's particular authorship and story history. Cross-references are useful for comparison; they should preserve which author supplies each volume, quotation or event. A mention of the Revelations alone does not establish a direct physical appearance of Gla'aki.
